Farmer Matt
Matthew Compton has a strong background in agriculture, having grown up on his family's farm near Summerside. He has been passionate about farming since he was young, and today he proudly serves as the fourth-generation owner/operator of the Compton family farm. The farm specializes in growing strawberries, sweet corn, mixed vegetables, pumpkins, wheat, and straw. Matthew is deeply committed to farming and aims to connect directly with consumers by opening up his farm to the public through activities such as corn mazes, U-Pick Berry Patches, and a roadside stand. His goal is to educate people about the origins of their food.
In his role, Matthew manages farm operations, including human resources, crop management, planting, harvesting, and sales. Unlike dairy farmers who work with intermediaries like ADL, Matthew actively engages with customers, educates them about farm products, and fosters community connections.
Matthew has been involved in agriculture throughout his life. He studied Agricultural Mechanics at Olds College in Alberta and is a certified red seal mechanic and heavy equipment technician.
Despite the demands of farm life, Matthew is dedicated to supporting his community through donations and by serving as a positive ambassador. His business supports local events and fundraisers, and he is a board member of the PEI Federation of Agriculture. The farm also participates in PEI Open Farm Day as a host farm.
Matthew's favourite way to enjoy PEI products is by eating a fresh strawberry straight from the plant. He firmly believes that locally grown food is the safest and healthiest option. He invites customers to visit the farm to see where their food comes from, emphasizing transparency and honesty about farming practices. His ultimate goal is to provide his family, neighbours, and community with wholesome, locally grown food, contrasting sharply with fast food or packaged alternatives and embracing the most natural and wholesome form of food production.
